Change to Engineering Pre-Major
The college is implementing an admit to major process that will utilize one application for all engineering programs. This new process goes beyond the traditional grade metric and incorporates a multi-factor review through which the voices and stories of all of our aspiring engineering students can be told. Only students enrolled within the College of Engineering are permitted to participate in this admission to major process.
Those students interested in engineering and enrolled in programs outside of the College of Engineering are encouraged to change into the college as soon as they meet the criteria.
Note: Students currently enrolled outside of the college and are wishing to complete a dual degree will still want to complete this request. Students can indicate this intention on the request form. If their request is approved, the student will be added to a engineering pre-major on a second degree program.
Students who meet the following four criteria will be permitted to change into the College of Engineering pre-major program:
- have a 2.5 or better cumulative OSU GPA
- have earned 12 hours or more of graded OSU credit (excluding terms of enrollment through post-secondary enrollment programs such as Academy)
- have completed Calculus II (Math 1172 or 1152); or direct equivalent transfer or EM credit for Math 1152 or higher
- have credit for one of Chemistry 1210, Chemistry 1250, or Physics 1250
Students are required to be enrolled in the College of Engineering to participate in the admission to major process. In order to be eligible to apply for admission to major, students must change into the college no later than the first Friday of the semester. For this reason, students are encouraged to submit a request during the semester they are completing their final eligibility courses. For example, if a student is completing their final eligibility courses in Autumn 2021 and wishes to submit an application to major during the Spring 2022 admission cycle, they will want to submit a request to change into engineering during Autumn 2021 or by the first Friday of the Spring 2022 semester.
Students will need to submit a Change to Engineering Pre-Major request form (below). To understand your interests in our programs, students will be asked to indicate the three majors they are most interested within the college. Students will apply to three majors within the College of Engineering during the admission to major process. These selections do not commit students to these majors. Students will be changed into their first choice pre-major program if their request is approved.
Since students did not take part in the Engineering survey course, they are encouraged to meet with and advisor in their desired majors as part of major exploration process. Contact information for each engineering major can be found in the contact panel.
Students currently enrolled in a major in another college and wishing to complete a dual degree with an engineering major should complete the Change to Engineering Pre-Major request form. On question 4, students should indicate they are wishing to complete a dual degree. When the request is processed, students will have a second degree program added to their account alongside their current degree program. Students will still need to apply for admission to major.
Requests to change into the college are reviewed at the end of each semester. Students will be notified after final grades are due. Students that meet the eligibility criteria will automatically be changed into their requested pre-major program. Students that have submitted a request form and no longer wish to change into the college should ask ENG-Advisor@osu.edu to cancel their request form.
