Enroll in Engineering

Note: The outlined process below is for current Ohio State students. If you are an incoming student who was not directly enrolled as an engineering pre-major, we strongly encourage you to consider other majors in the science, mathematics and technology fields of study. We do not recommend that incoming students start in another major with the intent of eventually pursuing engineering as we have a limited number of seats and this may add time to degree. Students can review majors at majors.osu.edu.

If you are a current undergraduate student at Ohio State, you will need to meet the following admission criteria to officially enroll in the College of Engineering:

  •   Completion of Math 1172 or Math 1152, or EM credit or transfer credit that is directly equivalent to Math 1152 or higher,
  •   Credit for one of the following: Chemistry 1210, Chemistry 1250, Physics 1250, or Biology 1113 or 1114,
  •   2.5 cumulative OSU GPA, and
  •   Twelve hours of graded OSU credit (excluding terms of enrollment through post-secondary enrollment programs, such as Academy).
Pre-major programs can admit a student who meets the course criteria, but does not meet the cumulative OSU GPA criteria, as long as the student has at least a 2.0 cumulative OSU GPA. These decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis, depending on the student’s academic performance and at the program’s discretion.

Once you meet the criteria above, you can request to officially enroll in the College of Engineering by contacting an academic advisor in your pre-major of interest.

If you are currently enrolled in the College of Engineering and want to change to a different engineering pre-major, contact an engineering academic advisor in your new program of interest.

The deadline to officially enroll in the College of Engineering or change your pre-major is the First Friday of the term. After that day, you can still request to change into the College of Engineering, but you will not be officially enrolled in the College of Engineering until the following term.

You can complete many foundational math, science and engineering courses before officially enrolling in the College of Engineering. These courses include:

  • Calculus
  • Calculus-Based Physics
  • Fundamentals of Engineering (ENGR 1181.01 and 1181.02)
  • Chemistry

Taking these courses will allow you to master the foundational principles critical to the engineering curriculum and explore your interest in the discipline.

If you are currently enrolled in the College of Engineering and want to change to a major/pre-major outside of the College of Engineering, contact an academic advisor in your new program of interest to learn more about the program and any admission criteria you may need to meet. You can find contact information for all advising offices at Ohio State by visiting advising.osu.edu.
